There are already quite a few libraries available for it, and everything that you need for basic math stuff (particularly linear algebra and matrices) is built-in. Their benchmarks say that it's almost as fast as Fortran or C, and my experience agrees with this. It's easy to use, intuitive, and very fast. It has a REPL interface, and (i think) uses just in time compilation. Julia is a relatively new open-source (edit: meaning it's free) technical computing language. I have another option to suggest to you: Julia They can hopefully give you a good idea of the power of the language and all the neat stuff you can do with it. If you are thinking about getting Mathematica, I'd suggest watching some of the 'training' videos on their website. But boy is it fun to play with-using a live stream of your webcam as the argument to a function? Definitely a thing. In the end, I think I can summarize by saying that if you have extra cash, I would definitely recommend Mathematica, but it is in no needs crucial to your education. Worlfram Alpha is built using Mathematica ('the Wolfram Language') and you can query WA from directly within Mathematica, which will then give you the code for the answer (like if you wanted to 'plot x 3 = 3 from -10 to 10' you could type that string and you would get both the plot of the function and the code to plot the function) which is very helpful for learning the language as well. You can get an educational license but it's still $160 if I remember correctly. What that answer means, of course, is up to the programmer to figure out. Realize you're actually doing calculus? Throw that same image into an integral and Mathematica will spit out an answer.

What I really like about it is that you can do just about anything with it-write a function that works on images? You can copy and paste an image directly from the internet as the argument to the function and it works fine. It makes doing complicated things quite easy and also has a LOT of syntactic sugar for messy things. I use it a fair amount and love it, but it has a pretty steep learning curve to it (and you're most proficient if you think about it as a functional language, I've found).
